In the pre-Democracy era, the Dan Qeqe and Wolfson Stadiums were the only two sports venues that were available for all sports by the disadvantaged communities. Both have subsequently been upgraded. Since 1992, all major cricket and rugby teams have played or hosted development clinics at the Dan Qeqe Stadium.

Several “firsts” in the sphere of sport are linked to St. George ’s Park. A cricket club was started in 1843 and in 1859 the new P.E. Cricket Club was granted land that it still occupies within the park boundaries. In 1882 the first bowling club was established there. In 1889 the first cricket test match against England took place, and in 1891 the first rugby test.

Algoa Bay is regarded as one of the best sailing venues in the world, while scuba-diving is of world class quality with beautiful reefs, ship-wrecks and colourful soft coral species.

Rapidly becoming known as Africa’s watersport capital, the city is favoured by beach and watersport enthusiasts and offers a host of activities and races throughout the year.

South Africa’s first international cricket and rugby matches were played in Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth)!

Nelson Mandela Bay’s biggest annual event is the “Splash” Festival, which takes place during the Easter weekend. This annual beach and family festival is one of South Africa’s top festivals and a highlight on the Eastern Cape Calendar.
